JR Harajuku station newly opened!
New Harajuku station building was opened on 21/Mar/2020 after the departure of the first train. The stylish 2-stories new building is designed to straddle the train tracks with a convenient store and café in the building.
The size of concourse, ticket gate area and the rest rooms are 2~3 times larger. Larger elevators and 2 exits will reduce congestion of passengers at the station. The old station house, built in 1924, is the oldest wooden station house in Tokyo which has been loved by many people visiting Harajuku. However, it has been decided to be rebuilt since it fails to meet the present fire resistance standard. It will be demolished after the Olympic & Paralympic Games and be restored with the fire-resistant materials.
